So, I rearranged my office. My old desk (swipe to the 3rd pic) was a behemoth. It also had a very special place in my heart, as it was designed and hand-made for yours truly by yours truly and yours truly’s brother-in-law (who was the REAL brains behind the operation, let me just say… without him, my desk would’ve ended up looking something like Michael Scott’s end table). It had a piano slide out, it had cool, hand-made drawers and cubbies all over the place… oh, and did I mention it was HUGE??? A few years ago, I read On Writing by Stephen King. As it did for many other writers, it changed my writing life. There was one little part that always kinda stuck with me. Ol Uncle Stevie talks about his old writing desk. It sounded a lot like mine (sans cool piano slideout) - huge, bulking, directly in the center of the room and taking up much of the space. He talks about how he downgraded to a small writing desk that he stuck in the corner, saying that art is a support system for life, not the other way around. That stuck with me. And as silly as it sounds, just being at such an imposing thing put some psychological pressure, so, after a few years, I decided to downsize. I plan to get a small reading chair and side table soon to put by the window. I want this to be a chill place, an open place, a place where there’s space to be creative, to be unbound, to move and be moved. Maybe I’m making too much of this; but I don’t think so. Anyway, enjoy some book pics, at the very least 📚

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ There is much to be said of this walloping pack-a-punch of a novella, and to call it a merely a good book would be to call its furry hero merely a good boy. First, the writing. McRobert writes with the comfortable yet precise prose of someone who’s been writing longer than he’s been alive: every paragraph, every phrase, every word just fits. The writing is confident and polished in a way that only a natural-born writer can execute, but is still down-to-earth and real enough that anyone could pick this beauty up and understand it. I can’t wait to get my physical copy, as there were soooo many turns of phrase and idioms that I was dying to underline and ruminate on. Next the story. It’s about as clean as you can get - no unnecessary rabbit trails, no extraneous characters or details, no fluff, everything and everyone were well-functioning organs in the body that was this beautiful story - but beyond just being clean, it was truly beautiful. Because of some traumatic experiences with dogs, I have a bit of a fear of them. I’ve always thought they were beautiful and I know they can be the most loyal friend a person can have, but I’ve never been a “dog person.” I think this book changed that. Somehow, Neil was able to write a dog who was a fully-formed character without going into either cartoonish anthropomorphism or by just appealing to other famous dogs and acts of bravery. Riot is as real and lovable as any human character I’ve read, and I’m fairly close to asking my wife about finding a Riot of our very own. Besides that, I loved each and every storyline and fully fell into caring for each one, a hard but necessary feat in shorter form fiction like this one. Only the best authors can execute this in such a short story, and Neil shined like the sun. Finally, the man. All the best fiction is true. No, I’m not saying Neil is peering somehow into an alternate reality and transcribing what he sees as a kind of history book, but that the themes in this book - childhood, bravery, duty, life - are truly and beautifully said. Neil’s heart shines through and I can only hope and pray he doesn’t keep us waiting too long for whatever’s next!

It’s been a long month. Between the complete upheaval of my life in more ways than one, the existential crises of simply BEING in this time and place, and the exhaustion that comes with all of these, my writing and reading has kinda taken a back seat in most of the practical ways. What I was glad to find in sitting back down to write in the morning or finally having the time and energy to read at night these last few days is that it was ONLY the practical ways - the actual composition, the physical picking up of the book - and that as I dove back into this world, I realized I never really left; or maybe that it never really left me. Last week, as things began to settle a bit on my major fronts, I sat down at my newly configured desk in my new office and began to write a story (which, by the way, came from everything going on in my life - the machine never really stops). It was scary at first: I couldn’t find the right words or phrases, the characters felt flat, the hot points of the story miles away and beyond my reach. But even as I struggled, something in me began to unfurl and stretch. Something began to come alive again and it feels like a fresh wind. Anyway, all that to say, I’m back and hopefully on my way to being better than ever. I’ll have a new short story collection coming out by year’s end, a new novel by next year, and maybe even some short stories in between.
